I’m a loner, I’m brave

Two poems by Kim Yurim, translated from Korean by Megan Sungyoon

Machine

Today’s metro looks like a very human machine. It runs in a straight line…… (That’s all) And runs and stops. (That’s all). This doesn’t make the metro sadder. Perspiring. Crossing legs. Shrugging shoulders. Hugging the bag as tightly as possible. Holding… A drippy umbrella, as closely as possible. (Too difficult too human) I wanted to make her laugh when we first met. (Too difficult too human as much as possible) I used honorifics. Why are we too difficult too human that’s all? Although I wasn’t sure, I still thought of the thing called spring (that’s all) and sometimes naturally got out of the basement. (Again that’s all) That is Seongsu Bridge. Other than that maybe spring rain. Even the spring rain came and went.

Nice, France

Don’t follow me, don’t follow me, don’t follow me, I shouted three times and looked back

In the black ocean your body rose and sank.

I said many words. I’m a loner, I’m brave. I’m scrawny, but I’ve got charms to compensate for that. You were smiling with your blonde hair blowing. I said even more words. I’m not someone who succumbs to that much silence, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, I’m strong enough to ignore such rules. You were laughing so much your curly hair was shaking. You touch my eye. Pinch my nose. I keep saying. Do not touch me, I’ve read a book by Jean-Luc Nancy. I don’t have a religion, but because I think god is quite believable, I want to ask if you believe in god. You laugh. You laugh and stand up from the bench and shift your gaze onto the night sea. Come to me and put your two hands on my shoulder. I said words. I said certain words. Said immemorably many words. Said words even at the moment you approached wanting to kiss. I’m brave, and good at saying words of refusal. And soft and polite. I’m like that. I’m like that. You stop stroking my hair and laugh. My hair flows between your fingers. You look at me, then undress and jump into the sea. I stand up and walk.

I have all pros yes, yes, yes, repeated with my clenched fists I’ll kill you if you keep following me, didn’t say words like that walked slowly so you could follow me

You could swim and swam like a fish and followed me don’t follow me, don’t follow me, don’t follow me, shouted three times in Korean and looked back the black ocean was undulating
