choose which world in all this water

Three poems by Simon Johannin, translated from French by Cory Stockwell

*

Choose which world in all this water.
I still hear the cry of fish, the gold that flows in the morning on the palm     tree leaves.
The search for meaning in this parchment of doubt.
The weight of the wings we carry.
The twists and turns of these bodies that formed nights.
The whisper of the salt.
The darkness of a wound in a scarlet city.
The codes we set to keep this scent within a part of ourselves.
The language to speak it so we don’t jump into the sea.
It was the battle of storms, of thorns and of falls.
I saw that stark-naked cat on a roof in the night. I was a shaggy dog              sniffing in the leaves.
I’m still afraid of losing those smells.

Comment faire, comment dire

*

What to do, what to say
To cleanse the body of all its hungers?
How to taste living while smiling distantly?
It’s not sugar I’m speaking of,
But thousands of little voices, coming from thousands of little mouths
Wailing everywhere,
Guiding my steps toward clashes

The remains that comprise me no longer know how to enjoy
And I want to love life
As much as it has loved me up to now

*

*

If everything turns around you
From the sea to the mountains
And from the waves to this madman jumping
On the hood of a car
From these young girls whose youth is too young
To be embraced by lightning
To the ringing of churches all speaking
Of Italy
From those Thai beers to the sidewalk browned
By a sky too bright to be painted
From Saint Anthony to the pigeon going
On his shoulder
And from plants to piss
It’s because you’re at the center of a life
Whose heart moves ever closer
To the heart of a city
Sheltering you in its center
