And not now either

Six poems by German Lukomnikov translated by Ainsley Morse

German Lukomnikov
is a poet, prose writer, performance artist and actor, editor/publisher and master of the palindrome. Born in 1962 in Baku, where his father, Gennady Lukomnikov, was a poet and outsider artist. Lukomnikov has published fourteen books, under his own name and, prior to 1994, under the pseudonym “Bonifacius.” In addition to written “adult” poetry Lukomnikov performs as a slam poet and writes and performs for children. Lukomnikov’s work has been translated into 12 languages: French, German, English, Czech, Slovak, Armenian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Ukrainian, Belarussian, Japanese and Italian.

Ainsley Morse translates Russian and former Yugoslav literatures and teaches at Dartmouth College. She co-edited two recent collections of contemporary women’s poetry (F-Letter: New Russian Feminist Poetry and Lida Yusupova’s The Scar We Know) and is currently translating the early Soviet-era novels of Konstantin Vaginov and a surrealist children’s book by the Yugoslav poets Aleksandar Vučo and Dušan Matić.

или
здесь
и сейчас
или даже
здесь
но не сейчас
а сейчас
только тогда уж не здесь
и не здесь
да и не сейчас
не здесь
и не сейчас

here
and now
or
here
and now
or even
here
but not now
but now
only then not here
and not here
and not now either
not here
and not now

послушайте

ведь если звёзды зажигают

послушайте
я кажется к вам обращаюсь

* * *

listen

if stars are lit

hey listen
I’m talking to you

* * *

мы все такие разные

особенно я

* * *

we’re all so different

especially me

* * *

одеяло
заботливо накинутое на другого
плавно
перетягиваем
на себя

* * *

the blanket
draped with care over another’s shoulders
we pull
nice and easy
over onto our own

* * *

вероятность
чего бы то ни было
ничтожно мала
однако
всё время
что-нибудь происходит

* * *

the probability
of whatever
is next to nothing
and yet
something
is happening all the time

* * *

оказывается
это
была
жизнь

* * *

turns out
that
was
life
